How to Launch a Boat
It’s no secret that the boat launch can be scary, especially for newbies. However, launching your boat doesn’t have to stress you if you follow these helpful tips to master this maneuver to get on the open seas.
Prep Your Boat
When you are brand new to launching from a ramp, you may want to try to do so for the first time when it isn’t so busy. This will allow you to take the necessary time to do everything correct without being rushed. Some even suggest parking out of the way of the ramp and walking down to inspect it and the deck. This helps you know how steep it is, how deep the water is where you’re launching, and other important factors that help you successfully launch.
Backing Down The Ramp
Once you’re ready to back down the ramp and to launch your boat, you will want to align both your boat and trail, so you can back straight down. Back slowly as this gives you more time to correct the trailer if it starts to move crooked. Keep backing down until your trailer tires touch the water. Check to see if the stern of the boat is deep enough to float. If not, keep backing down until it is.
Getting The Boat Off A Trailer
When your vehicle is in park with the parking brake activated, get out and remove the safety chain. Release the trailer winch so you can unclip it from the bow eye. If you have someone with you, you can have them do this while you’re with the vehicle.
Launching Steps Checklist
- First, check that the drain plug is installed.
- Load all of your gear into the boat.
- Attach fenders to the dock side of your boat and remove any tie-down straps.
- Place dock lines on both the bow and stern cleats.
- Back down the ramp slowly.
- Put your car in parking with parking brake set and release both the safety chain and trailer winch.
- Use the bow line and give the boat a push to slide it off the trailer slowly into the water.
*It may be best to take someone who is well versed in launching a boat with you for your first few trips.*
