Understanding the Anatomy of Your Boat
When you’ve bought a boat for the first time, it’s important to understand all of its components before hitting the water. Casually boating occasionally isn’t the same as owning a boat. The most basic information that every boat owner should know includes not only how to drive the boat, but the parts of it too. While most of this information is the knowledge you acquire when getting your boating license, here is a refresher.
Parts of a Boat
Here we will discuss some of the most important parts of the anatomy of your boat. Not only will it help you navigate it best, but also understand what parts may need maintenance throughout your ownership.
Bilge
This is the lowest portion of the boat on the inside. Ideally, this is where you stand when the boat isn’t moving.
Bow & Deck
The bow is the front of the boat with the deck being any hang-out portions of a boat. The bow is responsible for helping the boat stay above waves and keeping you safe.
Cleat
This is the metal part that the boat’s line secures to. This allows you to drop the anchor and to remain in one spot.
Helm
The helm is how you steer the boat. The specific parts will depend on the boat you own, whether a sailboat or a speedboat.
Hull
Perhaps the main part of the boat, and certainly the biggest, is the hull. This runs from the front of the boat all the way to the back and includes the bottom of the boat, which sits on the water. They can come in different spaces, depending on the type of boat it is made for and its size.
Keel
As mentioned above, the keel is the beam on the bottom of your boat that starts at the bow and reaches the stern. The hull is actually built around it and some boats do not have a keel. Those boats propel themselves above the water and don’t need it to remain steady.
Stern
The back of the boat is the stern and it plays a major role in how a wave will break against the back of your boat. This is what determines what boat can handle different seas. This is a major determinant of what boat to buy, depending on where you live.
