Wakesurfing: Tips on How to Get Started
Wakesurfing is a thrilling water sport that combines elements of surfing and wakeboarding. It involves riding the waves created by a boat on a surfboard, without the use of a tow rope. This sport is growing in popularity due to its accessibility and the fact that it can be done in a variety of locations, from the ocean to lakes and rivers.
The best part about wakesurfing is that you own the wave and you don’t have to share it with other surfers. It can be one of the most fun, but hardest water sports to learn. However, the process is simple when you have a good beginner’s board. There are some basic tips to follow when you’re first learning how to wake surf to ensure that you’re safe at all times.
Tips to Wakesurf
- Choose the right equipment: The first step to wakesurfing is choosing the right equipment. You'll need a surfboard specifically designed for wakesurfing, as well as a personal flotation device (PFD) and a wet suit if you'll be surfing in colder water. It's also a good idea to invest in a pair of wakesurf-specific fins to help you maneuver your board and a leash to keep you connected to your board in case you fall off.
- Find a good location: Wakesurfing can be done in a variety of locations, including the ocean, lakes, and rivers. Just make sure you choose a location with calm water and no obstacles or debris in the water. It's also important to check local laws and regulations before you start wakesurfing, as some areas may have restrictions on boats and surfing activities.
- Set up the boat: Once you've found a good location, it's time to set up your boat. The boat should be a larger, inboard-powered vessel with a tower and a large wake. To create the best wake for surfing, the boat should be loaded evenly with passengers and gear and driven at a steady speed between 10 and 12 mph.
- Position the surfer: The surfer should start by standing on the swim platform at the back of the boat. From here, they can begin to paddle and position themselves in the sweet spot of the wake, which is usually about 10-15 feet behind the boat.
- Begin surfing: Once the surfer is in position, the driver can slowly accelerate the boat and the surfer can start to ride the wake. To stay upright on the board, the surfer should keep their weight centered and use their core and back muscles to maintain balance. As they progress, they can try different tricks and moves, such as carving and spinning.
- Take breaks and switch riders: Wakesurfing can be physically demanding, so it's important to take breaks and switch riders regularly. This allows everyone to rest and prevents fatigue, which can lead to accidents.
Wake Responsibly
Wake responsibly means that you’re having a good time, but also doing it so that you’re respecting other boaters around you and of course local homeowners too. Courtesy and respect go a long way in the waters, so following these three rules will be beneficial to you and your friends.
#1 Don’t repeatedly drive back and forth
Repetitively riding back and forth can damage shores and even docks. After a few times, it’s time to move to another location and to come back there later.
#2 Keep music at a reasonable tone
It’s important to be considerate to homeowners and those around you. Not everyone wants to hear Justin Bieber’s latest hit or Black Sabbath blasting outside of their home.
#3 Stay at least 200 feet from the shoreline.
It’s important to stay away not only to protect shorelines and other boats, but because it helps minimize any effects when it reaches the shore. Wakes are better in deeper water anyway, so get out there and stay away from your neighbors’ dock.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best thing about wakesurfing is that the time you practice is actually fun. Go riding with people who know how to wakesurf, so they can give you pointers. You’re so close to the boat while you’re riding that they will be able to give you advice that you can hear while on the board.
